S6 & Grand set up?

Postby pickett » Thu Feb 25, 2010 9:18 pm

Recently started lesson with and S6 I bought a couple of years ago. Apparently the neck can use some adjustment. Can someone give me an idea of what this or setup usually runs? I am in the Midwest. I recently acquired a Grand that will probably need setup too. Newbie here, thanks.

Well, I hope this is a misunderstanding of terms. I think what you mean is a set-up. 1. Set the relief, 2. set the string clearance at the nut, 3. adj the action at the saddle. 4.Fret dressing as needed. These are normal and common things to check and adjust.

Adjusting the neck means a neck reset. Less expensive on gits with bolt-on necks, but a serious repair nonetheless. It means that the neck is at the wrong angle to the body.

Best is to locate a trustworthy luthier or technician (ask around among the better guitar players you know) or you could ask your dealer if you really trust him. Set-up is money well spent. usually well under $100, probably under $50 (depending...)

I find Seagulls have a high action. I lowered it on my Grand after checking the other procedures listed. Good luck!

you probably want to take it to a shop and have it setup.
it makes a world of difference.
just tell them you want it setup and you want low action.

Thanks for the info. I had the setup done and new strings on the Grand for under $50. I have 30 days to play and the guy will readjust if not to my liking. Can't complain about that. I'll probably have the S6 done when the Elixirs wear out.
